  • Considerations for a new EPR

It is a daunting task implementing a new EPR in a secondary care setting. In terms of integration, it essentially means a new TIE. The Trust Integration Engine revolves around the EPR in most common configurations. It is all about passing demographic information to the downstream systems in other departments.

At Lincoln, my task is to build the myriad of interfaces to downstream systems that require an ADT feed. While a single interface is simple, handling multiple interfaces, from design to deployment quickly becomes a significant task.

This task is not made easier, in that the specifications for the downstream systems are simply not detailed or even exist. We have to consider how the system will translate the data from an HL7 message.

It does appear that system testing, will be the most important stage of this project. When we will be configuring the interfaces according to how the downstream systems handle the data.

  • New client: Lincoln Community and Hospitals NHS Group

Since March 2026, I have been assigned to work with this trust, for their new EPR rollout. I am working as an EPR Integration Engineer. My main responsibilities include development & testing of HL7 interfaces between the new EPR, NerveCentre, and the existing corporate applications.

The integration engine is Intersystems Healthshare. I have experience of this platform from 2018-2020, when I worked as a staff engineer for Hillingdon Hospitals NHS trust.
